It is not yet clear whether the man has any connection to the daycare centre.
It is understood that the injured children are three boys, all aged five, Swiss outlet 20Minuten reports.
Cops said a daycare worker reacted immediately, overpowered the attacker with the help of another man and held him until emergency services arrived.
The attack reportedly involved a “stabbing weapon”, according to Swiss outlet ZuriToday.
Terrified parents were reportedly seen running to the daycare centre to find their children after news of the attack emerged, according to 20Minuten.
A woman at the scene told ZuriToday: “I heard children screaming and then a lot of police officers arrived.”
Police are stationed nearby with sub-machine guns, according to local media.
The Forensic Institute is also at the scene, 20Minuten reports.
It is understood the daycare centre is located on the ground floor of a shopping centre.
Witnesses told local media of the “huge” police presence on site.
One person told 20Minuten: “There are at least six to seven police cars on site. The ambulance is also on the square with several vehicles.”
Zurich City Police said in a statement: “Shortly after twelve o’clock, the Zurich City Police were alerted to a violent crime on Berninastrasse. Three children were injured.
“A suspect was arrested in connection with this. There is no longer any danger to the public.”
